.Week. 2. Yis. (5/25/20)

What a great week we had this week I think. It is starting the rainy season, and the hurricane season is coming up soon. I don't know the exact date it starts, but it's coming up. It's actually about to rain right now; it's pretty dark skies.

We have another quote from my zone leader. It came on Sunday when we were doing the sacrament. His phone is kinda not so good, and he still has a year and some change in his mission. So he opens up the gospel library app and then everything crashes and his phone restarts and he's like, "Well, nice," and my comp is like, "Do you think your phone will make it through the rest of your mission?" My zone leader then says, "Well, I've been talking with God on that one. We'll see what He does." At the time it was hilarious, then his companion started swatting around his head and then just started walking around, and we were like what's he doing? A fly flew into his ear, and we're about to do the sacrament, and we all bust up laughing and postpone the sacrament for a few minutes until the laughing dies down haha.

Last pday we didn't do much, but on Tuesday that was pretty fun. We had district council and apparently we can do that in person because the governor of Florida was like yes this is necessary for some reason, but I'm not complaining haha. It was 16 or 18 of us. There was a lot of us there. I was trying to not die of laughter because at the end, the sister training leaders and the zone leaders got up and talked about Facebook and phones, and then I realized, the sisters come up to the bottom of the elders' shoulders. I never have had a conversation with them where it's just us and them talking, so I never really got to see the height of them. It's kinda weird. But I was just trying to contain myself, and then we prayed right after haha. That was the longest prayer ever, it felt like. When you're laughing in a serious situation, it just ends up being really long and nobody understands why you're making these weird faces and they look at you weird and then you just laugh even harder. We got Wendy's after, and there's a 2-for-5 thing. But there were 2 sandwiches and a thing of chicken nuggets on the picture, so I thought I got all 3. NO. It's a 2-FOR-5, not a 3-FOR-5. Oops. I was a little disappointed haha. We have done a ton of Duolingo, like, an abnormal amount. hehe. Me for Portuguese and my comp with Chinese. He took 2 years in high school.

It rained a bunch on Wednesday. We never wore rain jackets in Brazil, so I didn't bring mine here. Literally everyone has them. They have rain boots, rain jackets, rain everything. Oops. At least we have a car. We did some indexing today, and that was pretty fun. We had some fish for dinner with the elders next door. It looked like a very sad meal. It was 4 pieces of fish with 4 pieces of bread and 4 little things of beans. I have no idea what kind of beans because they weren't the Brazil beans I had in Brazil, but they were good. The food looked sad, but it was so good haha. We taught a member the first lesson because they wanted to hear it. Y'all should do that because it gave us something to do and it gave them something to do.

On Thursday I finally did a few situps, and I tell you what. Pain. haha. I lean back in the rolly chair and my stomach just tries to stretch and AAHHHHH pain haha. It went away after a day though. The zone leaders, district leaders, and the sister training leaders had a meeting today for like 2 hours? I have no idea. I played pool with another elder and then we played some pingpong with whatever we could find in the closet. The ping pong paddles were very beat up and didn't really look too appealing, so he grabbed a bowling pin and I grabbed a baseball bat. It didn't really work because bowling pins are kinda heavy and he was about to break his wrists or something, so he grabbed a tennis racket. We were having fun, needless to say. After, we went out again, to a store, and got a chicken fingers meal thing. It was good. Found out today that my comp can juggle with apples and eat one while he juggles. It is rather impressive. We tried to play some hacky sack, and it's rather difficult. We were going good then out of nowhere it just randomly went zoomin' to the left into the wall. Like how did that happen? We don't know. We also had a Bible study today with a pastor about forgiveness. It was rather interesting. It was fun. They had some serious energy. Then at the end, we went around and said what we wanted them to pray for for us. That was something I've never done. Usually it's what do you want me to pray for for you? But here it's will you pray for this for me?

On Friday we finished a list of calls that somebody wanted us to make, like 3 people answered and they were like uh yeah what do you want? We went to Walmart today again so that we could buy some food. At home we have all these ideas of what we want and then we write it down and get to Walmart and we're like this sounds like garbage, why did we want this? Then we get home and we're like this sounds great let's turn around and go buy it. We bought some cheese-flavored pretzels. I think? I was like why don't we just buy pretzels and buy cheese? Dunno. Talked to my parents today. That was good. I did some Duolingo for Spanish and learned the word for I and You. I'm basically fluent. Our mission president made a slideshow for why people think we don't believe in Jesus Christ. It was really interesting, and it just confused me even more for why people don't think we believe in Jesus. Jesus' name is in the name of the church. This is His church.

On Saturday we went and delivered a happy birthday card to somebody. It was quite the adventure--lots of dirt roads and we had no idea where we were going. The mission cars get thrashed and bashed, hehe oops. We did some more indexing today and tried to make a video, but the video editing app kept crashing. The indexing was great. I indexed burial cards from Minnesota. I felt the spirit super strong on 1 person in specific. I don't know why but I did. It was so cool. I just couldn't go on to the next page. I stared at this person's burial card for a few minutes, and it was a great spiritual experience. Indexing is doing great things for lots of people. We had a mission-wide Kahoot about the Doctrine and Covenants, and it was kinda painful. I was like yes, I read D&C for high school, I'll get these all right. No. I got like 15 out of 50 right. Also that sister who got kicked out of the Kahoot last week won again this week. Apparently she wins them all. She is very smart. We made some gluten-free brownies from the last missionary who was here--he was gluten free. The brownies were like, good enough, but lacking in something. They just didn't stay together and didn't have a real flavor of chocolate or like, much else of anything. They were good though; we ate the whole thing. This is also when I discovered my comp hates milk when it is alone, like if you just pour a cup of milk. It just aggravates him. Good to know, but I'm still going to drink milk like that.

On Sunday we did the sacrament again with the zone leaders--great experiences as always. Some time this week, we got into another "movie discussion," which is them naming movies and actors that they like and everybody bashes on them. I have no idea what movies they are talking about. I eventually said I feel like a proud grandma seeing all the grandkids talking about something but I have no idea what. I guess I'm not destined to be a movie critic. But the sacrament was fun as always. We sang a hymn at one house. At another is where the phone quote came from and the fly going into the ear. My comp is trying to grow a piece of a plant that fell off of a sister's plant in their house. We will see how it goes. We went to the institute building to have the other Spanish elders do a Zoom meeting or something. We taught somebody, and he was getting a little distracted. He gives good ideas, but we can't do anything about them because we can't go outside. Also I guess I talked to a sister missionary at the airport, and we are in the same district. That was really embarrassing when she said we were airport buddies and I was like hi I'm Elder Locey, nice to meet you. Oops. Heh.

Then we lastly have today, which was just a sweaty mess. We went on a hike. It was like a 10-foot elevation gain, and that was when we went to cross a little bridge made out of two 2x4s. Went down a little hill just to go back up another. Everything else was flat and full of mysterious bugs and only 1 type of spider that came in 3 sizes: 1. AH! that's big. 2. That's givin ME THE heebie ba jeebies eeekkkk. And 3. AAAHHHHHHHHHH shoot darnit crap no no no no no that thing is flip freek ooo uh juST RUN OK?! IT'S LIKE THE SIZE OF MY FOOT! JUST BURN THE WHOLE FREEKING AAAHHHHHHHHH. And to top it off, it's hanging in its web, in between 2 trees, for us to walk straight into it. Also forgot my bug spray on our hike, but Elder Jones had a slick (heh) little bottle of a casual 95% deet. It made it so the bugs jumped onto my skin and promptly jumped off. It was quite the feeling. There was a HUGE bee flying around us at lunch and IT CARESSED MY LEG AND SO I yelled at it. Felt kinda bad because I wanted to say get thee hence Satan but didn't feel it was appropriate. It was quite the scary experience. Dude was the size of half my thumb. AAAHHHHHH. We also saw a turtle. And that's about it.

Welcome Back, Everybody (5/18/20)

Telling by this email, I am now on a mission again. Just a quick 6 weeks at home. But now I'm in the Jacksonville Florida mission. I am currently in Tallahassee in a YSA ward on the college campus here. Completely forgot the name of the college even though I've gone there like 10 times already. Anyway, here was my week:

A welcome cupcake from a recent convert.
We start with Tuesday because that's when I flew out. Monday I just slept in and did nothing, kinda boring. But on Tuesday we got me all packed up and at the airport. I felt like first class when I was checking in because somebody came up to me and said, "Elder, we have been waiting for you. Come over here." Kinda crazy. The flight was a little long but could be much much worse--I could be flying back to Brazil haha. We made it to Atlanta. I saw my phone, and it said it was 3 and the flight to Jacksonville was at 7:30, so I was gearing up for a long wait. No, my phone didn't update, and it was actually 5 so I only waited 2 hours and not 4. Got to Jacksonville with 45 others, I think. There were a lot of missionaries. We were met by our mission president, President Wood, his wife, and his first counselor, President Fussell. Pres Fussell is from Georgia, and he's got quite the accent. We got to the chapel after, and there was a car that drove straight into a telephone pole. That was quite the crash.

Elder Kemp holding a lizard
It's Wednesday now, and we got some sack lunches for our midnight saving grace, also called a snack. I slept at the office elders' house, and it was a lot of fun. They, at like 1 am, were calling the assistants because they thought they lost or left a missionary at the chapel or somewhere else. Oops. We woke up a few hours later and had a phone training and Facebook training. Then we were told where we're going and left. It was great. I got on the caravan for Tallahassee, and it took a good 4ish hours. We drove though Lake City, dropped off a few, then to Tallahassee. My comp is from St. George and his name is Elder Kemp. He actually went into the Provo MTC a week after I went into the Brazil MTC, pretty cool. We are in a YSA ward and a family ward also. We're right on the college campus. We go there for our daily walks.

Thursday was great. Started out with somebody calling us and asking if we wanted donuts, so we said yes (naturally) and then asked who they were haha. Crazy story: her mother-in-law is in my comp's ward at home and she knows his mom? No idea actually haha. The schedule here is very different. It is spread out, and we have lots of time to do everything. So that's cool that it's not all crammed into the morning. It's a blessing and a curse. We live in a place called "the compound." It's 3 houses on the same lot and 3 sets of Elders. Good fun, I tell you what. I taught them how to play the soccer ping pong, and we just kinda mess around during our outside time. We have soccer balls. We also made a puzzle, go on walks, really do whatever as long as we're not coming into contact with people we don't know. We also had a game night and played Uno for like an hour, so that was fun.

We won 2nd place because the
sisters got kicked out of the
Kahoot for some reason, and the
elders next door told us all the
answers because it was Old
Testament themed and I have
no idea what is in the Old
Testament honestly.
On Friday I got to call home, and that was good. Felt kinda useless because I felt like I was just at home, because I was. Today was pretty cool because Elder Bednar came and did a Zoom with us and we got to ask him questions and talk to him and his wife. That was probably the fastest hour I have experienced. We have a massive 16 missionaries in our district, so that's an upgrade from our 6 in Brazil.

On Saturday we tried eating at a place called Whataburger, apparently it's like super popular here in the South. It was pretty good: the burger was big, and the fries were a little cold but I liked it. Also the spicy ketchup was really good. I'd recommend. We had a mission-wide Kahoot, and wow there were some sisters that were like 10,000 points ahead of the person in 2nd place. That was impressive. We were all fighting for 2nd place haha.

Then Sunday was just a bunch of fun. We went with the zone leaders to take the sacrament to a few people, and that's where my favorite quote this week comes from. My zone leader, as we were driving home past a Panda Express, he says, "Man, Panda sounds SO GOOD RIGHT NOW. Hmm, that's the devil speaking because it's Sunday. I can't have it." That was really funny. The rest of the day was pretty good, nice and chill like every other day. We went and helped 2 elders in our district make a little video for the Sister Training Leaders, and we went to this way cool little lake. We did ours at the campus. It was a lot of fun. It's just a lot of fun here. I thought stateside missions were going to suck, but it's honestly so much fun. I'd recommend it to anyone--stateside or foreign, DO IT!

It rained today.

Reassignment (5/12/20)

Here's a rundown of Benny's mission adventures since we last posted.

Saturday, March 28: Benny came home after not making it on his flight the day before and spending the night at the CTM in São Paulo. He was one of the last American missionaries to leave Brazil.

Sunday, March 29: We went to the airport again to pick up one of his bags that had been sent to Los Angeles on Friday without him. When he came home on Saturday, the flight went through Atlanta instead of L.A. Then his bag was sent from L.A. to Detroit before coming to Salt Lake. We were happy to pick it up and to pick it up so quickly!

Tuesday, March 31: Benny was temporarily released as a full-time missionary. He asked our stake president, "What happens when the Church realizes that tomorrow is April Fool's Day?" It was a hard thing for him to take off his missionary tag.

Sun-bleached bag.
April: Benny kept busy with YSA Zoom meetings, volunteering at the Bishop's Storehouse on Saturdays, being assigned as the senior companion with two other temporarily-released missionaries in our ward (including a sister! I told him that's the only time he'll have a female mission companion until he's married and serving a mission with his wife), helping us work at the cabins, and just hanging out with us. We've had our whole family home, and it has been a wonderful, unexpected blessing.

Friday, May 1: Our stake president called with reassignment news: Florida, Jacksonville Mission, leaving the week of May 12. Benny got his travel plans shortly after that (leaving at 9 a.m.) and then got new travel plans a day or two later (leaving at 11:20 a.m.).

Monday, May 11: Set apart as a missionary. He put that mission tag back on so fast!

Tuesday, May 12: Left for the airport a little later than we wanted. Turned around because we couldn't find his face mask but then found it in the car once we got back home. Stressed a little because of pre-quarantine airport busy-ness expectations. There were probably 12 cars total in the pick up and drop off lanes. Beck went in with Benny to get his boarding pass and his bags checked. The guy in the VIP line waved them over and seemed to be expecting them. There was one person ahead of Benny in the security line. He's on his way!!

Mission so far:
-6 months in Brazil for the CTM and almost 4 transfers.
-1 transfer (6 weeks plus 3 days) at home.
-Florida time to be determined. :) He's hoping to make it back to Brazil at some point, but he's just fine spending the rest of his time in Florida.

I think the first thing he'll have to do
when he gets to Florida is get a haircut!
